Hello everyone and welcome back! As most of you know, I moved into college yesterday. It’s been a super busy time so in the midst of the chaos, I’m letting Caroline from Caroline Olesky guest post. Here she is talking about why you should go greek in college.
Hey y’all, welcome back to Styled by McKenz! My name is Caroline and I’ll be guest posting on McKenz’s blog today. I am a fashion and college lifestyle blogger and a sophomore at Boston University. I’m studying political science and advertising and I’m on BU’s Snowboard Team and a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. Here’s how you can find me online:

I’m super excited to be guest posting for McKenz today because she’s such a role model for me! I’ve been following her blog for a little less than a year and it’s been so amazing to watch her grow up. McKenz is so hardworking and her blog inspires me constantly. I’m so excited for her to start at Kent and I can’t wait to read all about it soon.
As I mentioned earlier, I am part of a sorority at BU and it’s been amazing so far. I started college in January 2019 and rushed in February. You can read all about my recruitment experience here! In this post, I’ll be speaking specifically to my experience in a panhellenic sorority, but there are a lot of amazing Greek letter organizations that are centered around cultures, educational interests, and community service. Because of the range of Greek-letter organizations, I truly think Greek life can be for everyone. So let me tell you why I’m glad I went Greek!
It’s no surprise that people join sororities to make friends. This was especially true for me because I had a hard time making friends as a January admit. Joining Theta gave me a group of 150 other girls who are always there to support me. It’s nice to always have people that want to talk, grab food, or study in the library. There are also organized hangouts like Bachelor watch nights or study breaks with pizza!
One amazing thing about joining a sorority is that every sister is involved in something different on campus. For instance, outside of Theta, I’m on the Snowboard Team and I am a staff leader for the Community Service Center. One of my sisters, Victoria, is involved in the student newspaper and my grand big is an EMT at the school gym. If you’re ever looking to try something new on campus, your sisters can help you find an extracurricular activity.
Not only are my sisters involved in various campus activities, but they’re also majoring in all types of things. If I’m ever struggling in a class, I know one of my sisters has taken the class before and can help me study. Alternatively, if you’re looking to change majors, there’s always a sister who you can ask about the major you want to switch to. Many sororities also offer study hours to encourage sisters to study. I attend our study hours regularly because I enjoy studying with my friends and because it motivates me to study around my hardworking sisters!
While you certainly can be involved in community service if you’re not in Greek life, sororities make it much easier. Each sorority has its own community service hour requirement and to help sisters to fulfill it, they organize service events. Theta at BU volunteers with all sorts of causes: homelessness, the elderly, cancer research, and more. Sororities are also involved in on-campus service events like the Relay for Life. Panhellenic sororities are also associated with different philanthropies and host events to raise money each semester. Not only do you attend your own chapter’s philanthropy events, you also attend other chapters’ events to help raise money for various causes.
As I mentioned in my last point, being in a sorority means you’re part of the greater Greek life community on campus. You’ll get to attend events with other sisterhoods at your school. During recruitment, you’ll meet lots of other girls through your rush group. I am still friends with a few of the girls who were in my group even though we ended up in different sororities.
Even though I’ve only been in Theta for one semester now, I’m confident that going Greek was a great decision. I never considered myself to be a “sorority girl,” but I’m glad that I gave it a shot. I’ve found my best friends at BU in Theta, but (not to be cheesy) it’s not just four years, it’s for life.
Love from Boston, Caroline
