I’ll be honest, there aren’t a ton of things I miss about high school, but one thing is for certain: nothing beats a high school dance. Choosing a dress, getting all dolled up, taking pictures, and dancing the night away… agh there’s nothing better than the sweet smell of prom season. If you’re new around here, or simply need a refresher, allow me to fill you in. Last year I dedicated every Friday blog post in March and April to my prom series. I covered various different designers and styles, aiming to share a wide variety of options in hopes to give you ladies some inspiration when dress shopping yourselves. Prom is easily one of the best days of high school and you deserve to look and feel your best on your special night!
And while I’m old and washed up now (#collegelife), I recognize that a huge portion of my audience is still of an age to be prom shopping which is why I’m bringing back another year of my prom series! I’ve got tons of fun content lined up for the next two months— covering everything from the highest of fashions to affordable dresses under $50! Plus, if I’m being honest, I’ll take any excuse to wear a pretty gown— even if it is just playing dress up for the blog. So, without further adieu, let’s hop right on into week one.
I will be alternating between designers and retails over the next few weeks. If you’re unfamiliar with what that means— local boutiques and dress shops do not sell dresses from their company, they sell a variety of other designer’s “wholesale” dresses in their stores. I am working directly with the designers which means that you can find these dresses online or at a boutique/dress shop that sells this specific designer. I also will be sharing dresses from regular retailers like Lulu’s, Windsor, and SheIn which are stores that happen to sell prom-ish dresses on their sites. Whether you are hoping to purchase from a designer or a retailer, I will be sure to let you know all the details on each dress I’m sharing + lead you in the right direction as to where you can purchase each dress if interested!
I could not be more excited to be kicking off my Prom 2020 series with Rachel Allan! Rachel Allan is a new designer to me, as I did not partner with them last season which makes this post even more exciting.
Rachel Allan is one of the biggest dress powerhouses out there. They have handcrafted each and every style, aiming to provide every customer with the dress of their dreams. They encourage their customers not to settle and to find the dress that they are most confident in— whether it be from the Prom, Curved, or Perfect Angel Couture line. They promise heads will turn as you strut your stuff in one of their gowns and hope you walk away feeling vibrant and sophisticated.
The dress I chose is style 7000 and my gosh is it just the most beautiful dress ever! I’m guilty as charged for constantly gravitating towards nude dresses with gorgeous beading. There’s something about that combination that just gets me every time. However, I decided to step just a baby bit out of the box with this gown. While it does fit the criteria I just mentioned, this dress has got just a hint of blue throughout it giving it a subtle touch of color.
The fully beaded dress has a nude undertone which makes the sky blue details pop even more. And as gorgeous as this dress looks on camera, I can assure you it’s ten times better in person.
This dress has got a fit and flare silhouette that every girl seems to be crushing on this prom season. The neckline of this gown is perfect. It’s a little bit of sass and sophistication all in one with a deep v and a layer of mesh covering the cleavage. The bodice is fitted throughout before flaring into the most gorgeous train.
I loved this train because it’s the perfect size. I’m all for a dramatic train with tons of layers however they are so impractical for a) constantly moving around throughout taking pictures and b) dancing at the actual event. A train like this still provides a gorgeous, fanned out effect and yet it’s controlled which makes moving around in it so much easier.
To accessorize my look I’m wearing the most gorgeous iridescent stone earrings from SheIn. These look so similar to Kendra Scott and surprisingly matched my necklace almost perfectly. I went with nude heels for shoes but a silver lace-up pair would have been gorgeous too! For me, I always stick with my hair down and curled— nothing special, even on the night of prom. Trust me, I wish I could rock an updo. If you’re someone who can, a braided bun would look gorgeous with this gown and would compliment the neckline and back so beautifully.
One of the downfalls of shopping for your dress online is that you aren’t able to easily try on a variety of dresses. If I had the option, I would have opted out of the size two that I have on in these photos and went for a zero. Gowns can be tricky because truly every designer’s sizing runs a bit different. This gown is available in three different colors in sizes 00-16.
To ensure you grab the right size and to find this dress to purchase, click here to access the Rachel Allan store locator. This will take you to a page where you can enter your address and find the closest store to you carries their gowns. My biggest tip for prom dress shopping: try on everything! You never know what you may like until you see it on.
Well, that’s going to be a wrap on my first prom dress of the season! I so badly wish I had a prom of my own to wear this to— any high schoolers reading this, you know where to find me if you need a dancing partner, haha. I hope you all loved this collaboration with Rachel Allan. Be sure to let me know if there is a specific designer/retailer you are wanting me to work with this season and I will be sure to add them to the list. I’ll catch you next Friday for another prom post.
With love, McKenz
