With all the craziness going on in the world, a few pretty dresses to take my mind off of everything is just what the doctor ordered! As you know by now, my Prom 2020 series is officially in full swing. Despite being a freshman in college, I recognize that a huge portion of my audience is still of an age to be prom shopping which is why I’m bringing back another year of my prom series. My goal is to make the dress shopping experience for you a bit easier by sharing a wide variety of styles and price points, which is why every Friday I am dedicating a blog post to a different designer/retailer.
Today’s prom post is extra special to me because it’s in collaboration with Lulus! For those of you who have been around for a while, you may remember that my junior year prom dress was from them and I loved it. It was the simplest dress— a classic style in the most gorgeous hunter green. I wore it with a flower crown and felt like a princess. Here are a few pictures from the special night.
In my prom post with Rachel Allan, I discussed the difference between buying a wholesale dress from a designer vs buying a dress from a retailer. Lulus is a retailer that I’m sure most of you are already familiar with. They are an online store that sells a variety of different clothes, shoes, accessories, and evening wear. They have a section dedicated to prom where you can find a wide variety of gowns.
What I love about Lulus is their dresses can work for a multitude of occasions. Whether you need something for prom, a sorority formal, wedding, bridesmaid, or special occasion photoshoot, they truly have it all. I’ve even saved my junior prom dress because I know it’s a dress that I could reach for again in years to come. They sell timeless dresses which is exactly what you want when choosing a prom style.
Because they are a retailer their dresses tend to go for $70-$150 as opposed to designer gowns which tend to start at $250. If you’re looking for something a bit simpler and more affordable— a retailer is the way to go.
This first dress I’m sharing is so different than what I typically reach for. The “Can’t Stop The Glam” is a metallic purple tiered maxi dress that will steal the show. I’m not usually a purple girl but something bout this color just caught my eye. It’s a very deep purple that I feel would compliment just about every skin tone beautifully.
The dress itself has a v-neckline and seamed triangle cups. I love everything about the top of this dress as I feel the v stops at the perfect spot— a little bit of sexy and yet still sophisticated. I’m wearing my favorite Kendra Scott necklace with this dress but a longer pendant necklace would pair so perfectly with this gown. The straps are also adjustable which makes this dress even more accomodating to different body shapes.
The set-in waist tops the most fabulous tiered skirt. Although not red, this dress totally had me feeling like the red dress dancing emoji! This dress comes to life as you move in it which is perfect as you dance the night away at prom. Because this dress is definitely on the more “casual” side for prom, I think this style would work perfectly for a sorority formal as well. If my college was one to wear long dresses instead of short, I would definitely be wearing this one. However, I do know fraternity formals at Kent wear long dresses so I’ll have to keep this beauty around in case I get lucky and score a date to one!
As for sizing, I went with an XS and it just fits. Like I mean, just fits. If I were any larger in the chest, I would have definitely needed to size up. The length was perfect— although you can’t see, I’m wearing three-inch nude heels underneath to give me some lift. Lulus tends to run a bit smaller so I would definitely recommend reading the size charts and taking your measurements before making a purchase.
The next dress I picked up was the “Revel”. The main reason I picked this dress up was because it’s strapless! Of all the dresses I have shared over the years, I’ve never shared a strapless gown or something with a princess seam so this one had to come home with me. The dress is a bright berry red that will surely make a statement.
This dress is a much thicker material than the first one I shared because of the woven taffeta that helps give this dress its shape. Like I mentioned, this dress has a strapless neckline which surprisingly didn’t fall down once in the midst of photographing these dresses. I think I owe that partially to the no-slip straps and the fact that the XS was the perfect size up top. This sucked me right in.
The princess seamed bodice gives way to the most amazing skirt. I love how full and large the bottom half of this dress is. I could seriously twirl all day in this beauty. Oh, and the best part?! This has pockets! I promise you, there is no better detail for a dress to have. Pockets will make your prom night so much easier and luckily these pockets are super deep and spacious.
Because this dress is on the simpler side, I thought it’d be fun to play around with a few different accessories. For the hair, I decided to play around with some clips. I’ve had these butterfly alligator clips for a few months now and felt that now was the perfect time to break them out. They would look amazing scattered throughout an updo as well! I’m wearing my favorite earrings and cuff. However, the best accessory to complete this look would be a large, floral corsage. Ps— if you’re wanting to wear a flower crown to your dance, I think this dress would be the perfect one to do it with. You could totally make this a bohemian outdoorsy princess goddess look, haha.
Y’all! I couldn’t have timed this post more perfectly. Today only, Lulus entire site is an additional 25% off with code LULUS25 which means these dresses are even more affordable than they already are. You don’t have to spend a fortune to feel (and look) like a million bucks! Shop these dresses while they are still in stock and click here to browse hundreds of other special occasion dresses.
What I love about these two dresses is that they work for prom but they aren’t limited to just that occasion. I will definitely be hanging onto these two as I just know I’ll find a reason for them over the next couple of years.
Thank you so much Lulus for sponsoring today’s post! It has been a pleasure wearing and supporting this brand for years now. I hope you love their dresses as much as me. If you end up wearing a Lulus gown to your dance make sure to send me a few photos so I can share them over on my Instagram. Check back next Friday for my next addition to my 2020 prom series!
With love, McKenz
