The number one question I get asked from you all during back for school season is “what am I supposed to wear during sorority recruitment?”. Thankfully, you have me to share all sorts of outfit inspiration with you over the next few days. I have decided to split my “What To Wear” series into three different parts based on the different rounds of sorority recruitment we have at Kent State.
Today, we’re starting with ten different outfit ideas for Open House round; tomorrow will be Sisterhood and the following day Preference round. My goal is to provide as much outfit inspiration as possible while sharing styles that are realistic + affordable.
For the sake of there being so many different outfits, I took these photos old school, #mirrorselfie style. I hope you don’t mind—I just knew 30 outfits over the span of three days was pushing it if not.
Please keep in mind that every school’s dress code is a little different so what works for me, may need to be modified a bit to work for you! If you go to Kent State the suggested outfit guidelines for this round are: casual/cute, skirts, rompers, comfortable shoes, flowy pants, cute top + jeans.
In last year’s Open House round, I shared a handful of options with denim and was reassured by many of you that denim wasn’t allowed at your school. It is at Kent, but this year I kept them denim options minimal. And when I did go that route, I went for white denim instead. I’m a sucker for a good pair of white jeans—they look so polished and are the perfect way to dress up an outfit.
For the top half of this outfit, I’m wearing the most adorable top from SheIn. I love this paper bag style and the cut of this is so elegant. To match, I threw on a pair of platform espadrilles. These are some of the best shoes—they give you a little height but are far more comfortable than your average heel. I’m obsessed and wish I had these when going through my own sorority recruitment!

If you’re stuck on what to wear for recruitment, go for a two-piece set. These make for a no-brainer outfit idea and are so easy to style. I wore this set in Chicago and it was a big hit with you guys! To finish off the look pop on a pair of nude slides to match and a fun pair of earrings. Statement earrings help draw attention to your face, making you a bit more memorable which is the ultimate goal. These butterflies score me loads of compliments and are super lightweight—you’ll be seeing them a lot throughout this series!

I know several schools require all PNM’s to wear the same tee shirt for the first few days of recruitment. We don’t do this at Kent so I’m just using a basic black and white Alpha Phi tee in place. Get creative and reach for a skirt instead of shorts! This is one of my favorites—the rust color is crazy flattering with my summer tan and the tie side detail is adorable.
I don’t recommend heels unless you’re used to wearing them! You’ll be on your feet alll day so comfortable shoes are a must. I personally love the extra height for a confidence boost. I’m accessorizing with lots of gold jewelry.

I know a lot of campuses are doing hybrid sorority recruitment this year, meaning the first days are held over Zoom. If you’re in that boat, this outfit could be right up your alley! I just got this one-shoulder top from SheIn and it’s SO cute. Not only do bright colors make a statement but they photograph super well too! If you want the look of elongated legs without wearing heels, reach for lace-up sandals. These give off the same effect! Linking a similar pair since these are old.

This outfit is super similar to what I wore during my own sorority recruitment two years ago! These basic tank tops are a closet essential in college—you can wear these to class, going out, for sorority events and more. Their double lined and super thick! I’m obsessed and have them in a gazillion colors.
I’m pairing one with a cute tie-side skort from Romwe. I love skorts because they give you the mobility of shorts but the dressiness of a skirt. This one comes in a handful of colors but I love the rust. For shoes, I’m keeping things casual + simple with my Jacks!

You can’t go wrong with a sweet sundress! Our Open House round is two days and the second-day people tend to step their outfit game up a notch. Something like this is still casual but looks like you’re putting a bit more effort in. For shoes, I’m slipping into short mules. These have just the right heel height and with a bold floral earring, you’ve got the perfect duo!

Skirts are a super safe option for this round. They look a bit more polished than shorts and yet aren’t crazy fancy either. I love this ruched one from SheIn. It fits me beautifully and has the most adorable ruffles. I’m wearing it with a solid white tank top and a pair of white mules to match. These are super similar to those last pink ones and are so easy to walk in.

Rompers are another awesome option for your second day of the Open House! There are dozens of styles out there right now. Romwe, SheIn, Pretty Little Thing, and Princess Polly have had my favorites as of recently. This purple checkered one is from Romwe and is very modest. With a straight across neckline and full-length shorts, you’ll certainly be passing dress code. Plus, puff sleeves are the perfect accent. I’m wearing simple white slides with this outfit to keep it comfy.

I figured I’d throw in one more tee shirt look for y’all! As I said, skorts are a recruitment must. This green one is one of my favs with adorable tie-side details. A pop of color is a really easy way to spice up a bland tee. To keep the outfit cohesive, throw on a pair of shoes to match. These chunky platforms scream YTK and make every outfit instantly 10x cooler!

I actually threw this outfit together on a whim because I felt that all of these looks were rather feminine and I know not all of you have that same style. Ironically it’s one of my favorites of the bunch.
Although many schools will say no to denim, something colored and patterned like this will certainly fly. Not to mention you’ll definitely stand out which is the goal! That basic white tank and a pair of sneakers pair perfectly with this. It is so important to wear what you feel comfortable/confident in, even if it seems different then the norm. Layer on the chunky gold necklaces to give this look an edgy twist.
