I’ve been a busy travel bee lately. If it were up to me I’d spend every week jetting off somewhere warm but this week I switched it up, spending four days in New England.
I split my time between Boston, Massachusetts, and Newport, Rhode Island bearing the cold with chunky sweaters and colorful scarves. I’m in the midst of working on my Boston Travel Guide but in the meantime, I wanted to round up my outfits. Sharing what to wear in Boston this winter alongside links to shop and directions to some of the most Instagram-able photo locations. Enjoy!
Boston temperatures didn’t creep above twenty degrees the entire week so lots of layers it was. While traveling throughout Europe I quickly learned that my go-to layering technique begins with a fitted long-sleeve bodysuit, then a long-sleeve shirt over top, followed by my chunkiest sweater. Despite the cold, I’m dreaming of spring so I opted for a pastel blue sweater. I refuse to leave the house without a scarf when it’s this cold out so naturally, I picked one that’s a mix of that same pale blue and a bit of pink! I couldn’t love this combo more.
On the bottom, I’m wearing patent leather pants from Express. I’ve tried dozens of cheap pairs from various retailers over the years but none have compared to these. These fit beautifully and are lined with a little bit of fleece that kept me super warm. As for shoes, I’m wearing a pair of tall boots, that to my surprise, work well underneath straight-leg pants, without getting bunchy. I will admit the quality of these boots is nothing special but they pack up so easily in luggage and are fairly comfortable—I find myself packing them for every cold weather trip.
Can’t forget cute earmuffs. I’m also layering on my teddy jacket (not pictured here).

Almost every time I travel on an airplane I wear the same thing— a black long-sleeve top and black Aerie crossover yoga pants. If I’m headed somewhere cold you can typically find me with my chunkiest scarf draped around my neck to save suitcase space. This time around I opted for mini Uggs to keep my feet nice and toasty. I couldn’t believe how many people were wearing these in the city— it seems that history really does repeat itself, and that’s what all of the cool girls are wearing these days!
I knew it would be freezing in Boston so of course I had to bring my fluffiest jacket. I scored this knee-length teddy coat from Lulus a few years ago and it still remains one of my most reached-for outerwear pieces. It’s oversized enough to wear with chunky sweaters and it’s got a huge collar that keeps the neck nice and bundled. This coat is so big that it just speaks for itself— paired with any basics it’s instantly an “outfit”. This effortlessly transitioned from travel fit to casual Newbury Street shopping.

There’s something about February that just makes me want to break out allll of the pink! I got this neon pink sweater in the mail a few weeks ago and just knew it would be the perfect piece to bring a little bit of light to the frigid winter months. It going for my same layering technique—two long sleeves underneath the sweater and another funky scarf, this one a mix of greens and pinks.
As for bottoms— whenever it’s going to be really cold, like really cold I’ll wear these Mango culotte jeans. They are loose enough in the waist and wide enough throughout the legs that I can layer a pair of black leggings underneath. I’m not a huge fan of wearing two pairs of pants but I’ll gladly do it to avoid being miserably cold. I’m curious, what do you wear on the bottom when it’s frigid out? I know our generation doesn’t wear long john’s but I’m curious what the equivalent is, lol.
Putting on two pairs of socks and those same boots. I wore them all weekend long to save space + they matched everything. Oh, and of course throwing on a beanie. I have this one in several colors and it’s one of my favs for sure.

The second I saw this hot pink Lulus jacket I knew I needed it. I’ve always loved a bright pop of color and as I said, I’ve been lovinggg the bright hues lately. I will say, this is not a super warm jacket, but it certainly makes for an adorable outfit. And of course, me being me, I had a scarf to match!
I’ve got one of my favorite solid white sweaters on- I have this in several colors and I bring them on all of my trips. On my head, I’m wearing one of my new hats. I got this Russian-style visor from SheIn and scored so many compliments on it. I can’t believe how soft it is and it truly makes every outfit show-stopping. Definitely bringing this with me on my next trips!

I know my outfit guides are usually chock full of tons of outfits but it was too cold to be changing just for the sake of more photos haha. Plus, I found these outfits served me well for our days full of sightseeing, shopping, and sipping drinks!
I’m off to Denver, Colorado next! Stay tuned for more cold weather outfit inspo coming your way. Until then…
With love, McKenz
