Guide to Costa Rica

Costa Rica is the gateway to discovering the paradise that is Central America. Known for its vibrant culture and diverse landscapes this is a destination made for both vacationers and travelers.

Whether you want to kick back and relax at a scenic all-inclusive resort or get your hands dirty from an exhilarating excursion, Costa Rica has it all. Known for its diverse landscape this country is full of lush rainforests, insane waterfalls, and huge mountains. Take a dip into the Pacific Ocean along a black sand beach (a result of volcanic rock) or head to the Caribbean side for fine white sand and crystal clear waters.

With a blend of sustainable, holistic practices, Costa Rica is one of the most popular wellness retreats. Treat yourself to an aromatic massage and find your zen with a local yoga class.

The warm, welcoming culture of the locals will have you planning a trip back in no time!

TIPS & TRICKS

What to Expect

LANGUAGE:

Spanish is the official language of the Costa Rica although most employees throughout the hotels and resorts speak English.

SAFETY:

While crime does exist, Costa Rica is generally safe. It's one of the most popular destinations for solo travelers. The infrastructure is not up to most standards so I do not suggest driving or walking alone at night.

CREDIT CARDS/ATMS:

While there are ATMs in Costa Rican airports and within some of the more populated towns, they aren't as easy to locate compared to most countries. I suggest taking out cash before leaving the country to use for taxis, markets, and street food. Cards are widely accepted within the resorts, gas stations, and grocery stores.

CURRENCY:

The currency in Costa Rica is the Colon. It was named after Christopher Columbus and roughly 525 Colons equals 1 USD.

HIGH/LOW SEASON:

December-April are typically the busiest months with May-November being low season. August is the rainiest month of the year however Costa Rica experiences rain all year long as its a subtropical climate.

Transportation:

Costa Rica is incredibly spread out. It is very common for people to rent a car or take a small "puddle jumper" plane to get from one side of the island to the other. These flights require you to pack light. (carry on only under 30 pounds.)  We used private transfers arranged by the hotel for our airport and excursions trips.
