Guide to Portugal

Portugal is the ultimate European destination for "beginner" travelers. With friendly locals, a large English-speaking community, and a vibrant city center it's easy to immerse yourself in the European lifestyle without being too culturally shocked!

Portugal is known for its incredibly diverse landscapes— whether you're looking to explore the colorful city of Lisbon, the gorgeous coastline of Porto, the vast mountain ranges of Monosoraz, or the quaint coastal town of Sintra Portugal has it all. There's a little something for everyone to enjoy.

Expect a mild, tropical climate, and plan for some intense walking. Lisbon in specific is one of the hilliest cities in the world. In the 1800s a catastrophic earthquake shook the city, destroying over 50% of it. They built directly on top of these ruins which makes for steep, uneven cobblestone roads. You might want to hit the stair stepper in preparation of your trip, haha.

Regardless of when you're coming, you must plan to see the beach. Portugal has a large surfing community and is known for its World Record of "Largest Surfed Wave" at over 100 feet at Nazarae beach. One of the few European countries to have sand beaches vs rocks, it's a pleasant atmosphere on a sunny holiday.

TIPS & TRICKS

What to Expect

LANGUAGE:

Portuguese is the official language although English and Spanish are widely spoken by locals as well.

SAFETY:

Portugal is one of the safest European countries with a low crime rate and friendly locals. Of course, be aware of pickpockets, especially in the city center and never walk alone after midnight!

TRANSPORTATION:

UBER is widely used in Portugal and the easiest way to get around. Prices rarely exceed $20. Their famous 28 tram, bus, and subway system are widely accessible.

CREDIT CARDS/ATMS:

Cards are widely accepted however it's a good idea to have cash on hand for tips, taxis, and small local purchases. ATMs are widely accessible.

CURRENCY:

The official currency of Portugal is the Euro.

HIGH SEASON:

June-August attract many tourists as Portugal has a beautiful coastline full of beaches. I suggest shoulder season April-May or September-October to enjoy those same warm temperatures with fewer tourists.
