I can’t even lie, this is one of those blog posts I look forward to writing all year long. There’s something so special about looking back on the hundreds upon hundreds of outfits I’ve worn over the year and seeing how my style has evolved in such a short period of time. It took me forever to narrow down this year’s looks but I’ve finally deemed twenty outfits the best of 2020… here they are!
I started off 2020 on a good note—back in Kent shooting outfits twice a week with my blogger bestie, Sophie. This was my first time working with Boohoo and I got some of the most outrageous, yet fun pieces ever, this feathered skirt being one of them. If I’m being totally honest with you, this skirt is chip-clipped in the back since it was so big and yet the outfit still looks so effortlessly chic, giving me all the Carrie Bradshaw vibes.

Of all the outfits I styled in 2020, none made me feel as powerful as this number right here. This was also the year I began experimenting with blazers and you’ll see quite a few of them throughout this post. I picked up this romper for NYFW but ended up leaving it home. However, it still deserved it’s time to shine with my all-time favorite sock booties. I wore the absolute heck out of these shoes this year; they elongate and slim the legs, how could I not?! This photo shoot was such a turning point for me—reminding me that I am fully capable of chasing my dreams.

If I had to choose just one outfit of 2020 it would, without a doubt, be this number from my first ever New York Fashion Week. I had no idea what would be “acceptable” for fashion shows but I figured go big or go home, this is NYC, baby! I found these blue floral boots and matching dress on SheIn just weeks before my departure and instantly knew I needed them. I can’t say I’ve worn them since but my gosh did I score hundreds of compliments while wearing them. This day was so special to me!

I felt like the real deal strutting the streets of New York City in this look. I’ve never been a purple girl but I wanted to make a statement this spring and decided to give this blazer dress a try. With sparkly tights and a belt to accentuate the waist, it came together beautifully. I attended my favorite show of Fashion Week in this outfit, giving me the confidence to network my booty off all night long. Now that is what I call a successful outfit!

Back to reality, sigh…. this outfit arrived just days after we were sent home from school due to the Coronavirus. Remember the early days of banana bread, Tik Tok dances, and tie-dye sweatsuits? They feel like so long ago and yet this sweat set brings me so much comfort. I don’t repeat outfits too often but this one from Boohoo I’ve reached for time and time again; they really do have the best loungewear!

Oh my gosh, even months later I couldn’t love this outfit more. Around April I discovered the Express cropped flare jeans and (not to sound dramatic) ~my world was changed~. I swapped out almost every pair of skinny jeans I owned for these and they instantly became my go-to’s. I also received these white lace-up heels which quickly became one of my most worn shoes of the year. They instantly spice up an outfit without making it look too fancy—I can’t even begin to tell you how often I styled these. Oh, and the cow print purse…. she was an absolute icon in my closet.

I’d like to say I’ve never cared what people think of my clothes but this year, more than ever, I’ve found myself gravitating towards pieces that speak to me. Because frankly, life is too short not to dress like it’s the best d@mn day of your life…. even if you are in quarantine and the only place you’re going is the grocery store. This tulle dress definitely ranks high on this year’s list of “over the top” dresses I’ve worn. However, it’s the five-inch boa-fur heels that really tie the look together. I slip these on every now and then when I need a confidence booster.

2020—the year I fell in love with my cowboy hat. So much so, that I ended up ~investing~ in two real hats from Justin’s boots. I grew quite the collection of boots, buckle belts, and fringe this year too. You may be thinking “McKenzie, where on earth are you wearing those things?” and to that, I will answer (without hesitation), wherever the heck I want. No country concert needed—online classes, The Dusty Armadillo, or the top of a parking garage will do. These jeans were also noteworthy—my first pair of mom jeans and my most worn pair of 2020. If I’m being honest, these were probably a top seller of mine too; they were always on sale and so many of you loved them too.
from Spring 2020 Semester Recap
Here’s me in another pair of cropped flare jeans…. shocker! When I tell you I bought these in every color they had, I mean I bought these in every color they had. I’ve never found a pair of jeans that flatter my petite frame so well; I’m so glad I’ve grown out of my skinny jeans phase (for now). I also fell in love with styling heels with jeans. I know it’s not a new concept but it’s one that made me feel more “in charge”. Colonial sleeves also made their appearance this year and while I’m glad they are already gone, it was a fun trend to experiment with at the time.

There’s something about this look right here that just gets me! Let’s chat about a few things… This halter style tank was one of my favorites. It’s completely open in the back and so flattering. I have it in a couple of colors and it’s the best. These Tory Burch platforms—they are one of the oldest pairs of shoes in my collection and yet I always find myself running back to them. They’re incredibly hard to walk in and even more uncomfortable but look at them, they couldn’t be any cuter. The espadrille platform matches my straw bag to a tee. This straw bag wins most worn purse of 2020. I styled this just as much as I actually wore it; it’s super functional and such a practical size for everyday use.

l vacationed to Charleston, South Carolina in late July to meet my blogger bestie, Molly and we set up a photo shoot with a local photographer. There were cute locations on every corner and this pink door made for one of my favorite backdrops. This emerald green romper is such a beauty. Something about this outfit just feels so effortless, I had to include it. Plus, I’ve had dozens of friends borrow it, so I know it’s a fan favorite. I hope the butterfly trend doesn’t leave anytime soon because my gosh do I love these earrings. I wore them so much this year—they are super lightweight and match almost everything!
Can we take a moment for this look right here… perhaps I would love everything I wore if it were all royal blue, lol. I don’t reach for this hue all that often but I swear, every time I do it’s absolutely iconic. This floral jacquard dress was another SheIn score and it made for the perfect wedding guest dress. I had been dying to pull out these heels all summer and finally had a reason to wear them! 10/10 all around, I’d wear this again in a heartbeat.

In August I discovered Pretty Little Thing and fell in love with their cute going out attire. This little white crop top is another piece I’ve reworn a fair share of times. It’s incredibly flattering and makes your boobs look amazing! I have it styled here with another pair of cropped flare jeans and white lace-up heels… I mean come on, who’s really surprised?! Such a basic outfit yet definitely a favorite.
That same month I landed my biggest brand deal of the year, a collaboration with Ugg, and my gosh was I over the moon. I received dozens of new jogger sets, slippers, and zip-ups from them and yet this look right here is still my favorite of them all. In fact, I just wore this outfit last week. The Fluffita slippers also deserve an honorable mention—I’ve never been a slipper girl but I brought these to college and reach for them every. single. day. They are worth every penny and are such an essential if you’re a college student like me.

Well hello there, modern-day Blair Waldorf. There’s something about a white sweater with a plaid skirt that I’ll never stop loving. It seems like I have a variation of this pumpkin patch outfit in every year’s top looks; it’s such a classic. These shoes are also worth mentioning. I finally grew out of my over the knee boot phase and moved onto knee highs. These were all over Pinterest all fall long.

l may be in college but that hasn’t stopped me from working with prom designers. In 2020 I was able to collaborate with Morilee, Terani Couture, Blush Prom, and a few others to showcase some beautiful gowns. However, of all the pretty dresses I got to wear this year, this Rachel Allan one was easily my favorite. Very few pieces have ever made me feel this pretty; I’d give anything to wear this dress again.

ln the latter half of the year I discovered Fashion Nova’s flared jeans and similar to my cropped-flare experience, I stocked up on all the pairs. And while these patchwork bottoms definitely aren’t something I’d reach for on an everyday basis, this outfit features a lot of other wardrobe essentials which is why I decided to feature it. Me and this black turtleneck go way back. In all honesty, I wear it once a week along with this nude hat. I’ve always been a hat lover but it wasn’t until this felt one came along that I developed a full-fledged obsession. 80% of my outfits this fall featured this baby, lol.

This was also the year I discovered Spanx leggings. After my first collaboration with them in June, I quickly fell in love and began growing my leather leggings collection. And thanks to online classes, this outfit combo quickly became my new normal. I’ve worn this SheIn flannel more times than I’d like to admit over the last few months. I never thought I’d say it but I’m so glad they are back in style.
from 3 Ways To Look Comfy Yet Cute
Here’s me in a collared shirt and a pleated skirt—what used to be called a “school uniform” was quickly deemed the next best trend thanks to Tik Tok. I’m a sucker for this look with a pair of sock booties and that felt hat. I have a feeling the school-girl trend will be making its way into 2021 and I can’t say I’m mad about it.

And last, but certainly not least, the most amazing green maxi dress from Lulus. This photo isn’t even a week old but I loved it so much I decided it deserved another appearance. I’m always a fan of this color and nothing makes me feel more “me” than an over the top dress and a huge pair of statement earrings. I can’t say I’ve found a reason to wear this beauty but she’ll be sitting in the back of my closet until I do.
