Back in October when I was quarantined at home in my childhood bedroom I decided that it needed a major refresh. I’m not talking just a new pair of sheets, I mean everything. So this winter break I took it upon myself to give my space an extreme makeover with the help of IKEA!
I want to extend a huge thank you to my people over at the Baltimore IKEA for sponsoring today’s post and for making my shopping experience safe and seamless despite Covid. I couldn’t love my new space more and am so excited for you to see it!
Here’s an initial peek at the room! While I did get entirely new furniture, there were many things in my bedroom that I wanted to keep the same as my old. My room is rather small and since it is a perfect square, there are only so many ways to move furniture around it. I knew for a fact I wanted to keep the layout the same in addition to my gallery wall. I had just hung these photos in the spring and love them. I also kept the paint color the same—I have a soft gray on my walls and love how sophisticated it is.
My goal was to swap out my linens for something a bit more polished and to find furniture that would hold even more clothing than before. I decided to keep my color scheme to black and white with few gold accents and some gray mixed in throughout. Thanks to IKEA and some other new goodies my space turned out exactly how I envisioned.
I was debating between a few different dresser sets and finally settled on the Hagua in White from IKEA. The dresser is about a foot shorter than my last one and yet the drawers fit so much more. I was able to roll all of my jeans, tees, joggers, and more giving everything an easy-to-find home. I grabbed the matching night-stand to go with and it’s currently housing all of my crop tops, bodysuits, and bikinis. I’m so grateful to have the extra drawer space and am keeping just a lamp, my Alexa, and a sentimental photo on the top of it.
Here’s a look at the top of my dresser! My last dresser was super cluttered with tons of these clear plastic containers and lots of miscellaneous items. I wanted to keep this one super sleek and symmetrical. I grabbed two matching lamps from Bed Bath & Beyond which help brighten up the space big time. I was able to condense my makeup and beauty products into just two containers and am keeping matching jewelry plates on either side.
Because my room is so small, I don’t have extra space for a vanity/desk area so my dresser top is used for almost everything. To keep the top of this piece in good shape, I grabbed a black table runner to lie across it. That way if any makeup spills, I can just throw it in the wash.
After years of having a wooden bed frame, I decided it was time for a change. I grabbed the Sagstua from IKEA and the metal frame completely transformed the space! I also swapped my old linens for all new ones. To give the room a lighter feel I ditched my gray comforter and went with a bright white. I grabbed white sheets and a white bed skirt too.
To keep things from being too monochromatic I grabbed a black throw blanket for the end of my bed. As for pillows, I got a few new ones from IKEA. Their pillow inserts and covers are sold separately so you can easily change up the color palette. I grabbed a few charcoal gray ones in addition to my gold polka dot pillowcases.
I had originally grabbed this white Nissedal mirror from IKEA to hang horizontally above my dresser but it ended up being far too large for that. Madison and I decided the space between my dresser and nightstand looked a little awkward and that it was the perfect size for the mirror! Although I already have a full-length mirror on the back of my door, I’m loving having a second and cannot wait to film many try-on sessions in front of it.
I’ve always kept a bookcase full of shoes on the wall next to my closet but it was time for a little upgrade. I grabbed the Billy from IKEA and although it’s huge, it ended up being the perfect size to store all of my heels in color order. I did however have to ditch all of my old Seventeen magazines in the moving process #:( Regardless, I think this wall is so pleasing to the eye and am so excited to use it as a backdrop when filming videos.
I get questions on my gallery wall all the time so I wanted to touch on it for a second before closing out this blog post. I actually had all of these photos hanging in my college dorm freshman year but decided to put them in my home bedroom back in March.
All of the prints are from Desenio with the exception of my hometown map, which is from Mapiful. However, all of the frames are of various sizes from IKEA! They are attached to the wall using velcro Command strips.
In my last video, I’m sharing Part 1 to my extreme bedroom transformation. I’m sharing a little IKEA shopping vlog + haul of all the furniture I picked out before heading home to start building. My final room tour is going live tomorrow at noon. Be sure to click the subscribe button so you don’t miss out!
Well, do you love it?! I sure hope so! I have to admit, I was a little nervous about the final product when doing my furniture shopping but it came out just as I had envisioned if not better. Another big thank you to IKEA for sponsoring today’s post—it’s always a pleasure working with one another. Stay tuned, we’ve got an apartment to transform next! 😉
With love, McKenz
